Artist Statement A few years back, most of my holidays were spent with friends when, after convivial evenings spent conversing over a few glasses of wine, we would go out walking beside the tidal estuary in the wee small hours and immerse ourselves in the sounds and 'colours' of the night, far away from the glare of any street lights. That experience prompted one of my most extended series of watercolours and, served to influence much of my subsequent work.

Essentially my painting is an emotional topography, frequently a response to a specific (geographical) locale and time. I have no desire to paint the locale or event, simply my response.

The paintings invariably start with two or three rudimentary outlines; a tree, a hill, a star, a bat, a serpentine stream of moonlit water, as viewed against the night black shifting sands of the (once frequently visited) tidal estuary. Apart from these sketchily brushed lines, so much else is dependent on exploiting the accidentals. The paintings are frequently multi layered, using glazes, playing off transparent against opaque colours, staining against non-staining, frequently being bathed and brushed off several times during the process. After the submerging and brushing away, I tend to add in a few more structural lines (applied by a small brush) utilizing the random bleeds and sedimentation on the still soaked paper to determine the next step.

Owing to a protracted spell of ill health, my ouput is far from prolific these days, but thought I would like to share a few images.
