On the Similarities of God and Gardening
I sometimes ponder the nature of God, the God of the Old Testament in Christian scripture, He who holds so many in His thrall. Not that I believe this twaddle, mind you. The superstitions of a tribe of Bronze Age nomads have no place in the world I inhabit, a world that does not much correspond with the gaudy raucous jungle of my peers. But I do wonder what it would be like to wield the power of life and death, to see and know all, to bring fire and flood, pestilence and famine to creatures I created.
And then I shrug and return to my gardening, the only activity in my universe bearing the slightest resemblance to that awful majesty. Knowing what is needed, I plot the population of the world I am creating, amend the earth in which the powerless will live, plant and prune, send and withhold rain, relocate, segregate, and destroy whole villages of unwelcome invaders.
I take this very seriously. Being the arbiter of the fate of so many is a daunting task, fraught with difficult decisions, requiring much in the way of planning. I cannot comprehend wielding this much power over sentient beings, nor would I wish to. And why anyone would choose to voluntarily subjugate themselves by worshipping One who does entirely escapes me. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
