Current Gallery: Positive and Negative (10 pieces)
Positive and Negative Looking through the ground glass forces a world vision that is upside down and inverted, but the color palette remains unchanged. Color like the places we pass daily becomes meaningless. Sky is blue and grass is green, so what? Setting up the view camera in the middle of South Beach and clicking the shutter gives me a good hour to watch the image take place. The back and forth traffic paints vivid streaks of light and the wind blows the palm trees into a haze. These instances are all part of life captured in that long moment. Then comes the processed slide. Set on top of a lightbox, the illuminated piece of film becomes a window into the night. Yes, it is architecture, but there is life all around and inside these man-made structures. Eager to print, the experimentation begins. Many alternative methods are explored before doing it the old-fashioned way, with a color enlarger and RA-4 processor. Suddenly, my pre-dawn sky is turned into a nuclear sunrise and the streaking lights take on a fluorescence reflecting the energy in te air. Now we can say goodbye to ordinary. According to the American Heritage dictionary, a positive contains the areas of light and dark in their original and normal relationship. When viewing these positive , we confidently see them as natural truths. The opposite, or negative, then becomes a refusal to accept the truth. Although contradictory, there is no disadvantage to this denial of reality. These sets of opposition force a second look at what could be positively ordinary. -Lorraine Boogich
