In 2004 I began a project where, instead of keeping a sketchbook, I carried with me loose pieces of postcard-sized watercolor paper. All my sketches would then be addressed and stamped and sent to anyone who was on my list for correspondence. This list quickly grew, through internet requests, to include the addresses of as many strangers as actual acquaintances - over 100 in total. As of 2009, I had painted and mailed more than 300 original one-of-a-kind postcards, which are presumably now pinned on a variety of bedroom walls and refrigerators as far as Europe and Japan. Sending these originals into the ether, as it were, has always brought me great satisfaction, because it lets me dream that I am internationally successful.
I've always delighted in trading these paintings for food at restaurants, or bartering with friends for other forms of art. Because I consider these paintings to be merely sketches, I never considered selling them, but with my Fall 2010 puppetry tour of the US I was obliged to start selling paintings in order to buy gas to the next town. To my surprise, the paintings sold very well, and so I considered making these postcard images available to a wider audience.
I intend to continue bringing these sketchbook paintings to my performances for sale, but am also taking better care to get print-quality scans before I send the images off. The more recent paintings can be printed up to 16x22 (imagekind will allow you to order larger sizes, though I don't recommend it for these tiny paintings), though the older paintings will only be available at 7x10 or so - see the drop-down ordering menu for each image. Regardless of size, I am asking $20 for each print ordered (the remainder of the retail price goes to the printers), so an order for a 7x10 ($29.49) breaks down as $20 to me, and $9.49 for the printing (plus shipping).
I will be uploading my back-catalog over the next few months in chunks of 50. I will also be adding new sketches as they become finished. So thanks for perusing the gallery!
