The spirals of coiled shells have long fascinated naturalists, mathematicians, and artists. The geometry can be defined remarkably well with just three or four parameters. 3D raytracing with POV-Ray is ideal for wandering around in the hyperspace of all possible shell shapes. Changes in one or more of the parameters change overall shape. In "Shells Morphing," the shell of a clam is transformed to that of a snail as one goes from left to right. The shape of the opening of the shell is repeated over and over again as the shell grows -- as you can see in the cutaway view in "Capitol Snail." The shape of the opening in "Capitol Snail" is the digitized shape of the island where I live.
