Current Gallery: scatterbrained ( piece)
My painting takes a fun romp through pop culture, consumerism, corporate power and politics. It does so with a style that is influenced as much by TV, cartoons and comic books as it is by painters and art movements. Think of the narrative as an apocalyptic newscast with H.R. Puffnstuff as the commentator or, more simply, saturday morning cartoons for adults. My technique is loose and painterly with a cartoon inspired palette and comic book inspired quality of line. At times I increase the drama by adding 3D elements to the piece. This breaks the 4th wall, entering the viewer's space. Many pieces use what I call the "Goink" which, borrowed from cartoons, is a crescendo of tension in the narration of a scene. It's that specific point when all time seems to freeze; a sudden realization overtakes a character, often causing that character to jump in the air, eyes wild and popping out, their jaw hitting the floor. I like to use the "Goink" because it exaggerates the sense of action, adds an extra layer of tension to the interplay of the characters and it ends the narrative with an exclamation point.
