Artist Statement Heather Soodak, is a northern Californian native and graduated from Laguna College of Art and Design with her B.A. IIllustration. She has been drawing ever since she was able to pick up a crayon. Her main focus is children's book illustration although she welcomes all artistic challenges. She is currently working on freelance illustration and obtaining an art teaching credential.

"My work sparks with an idea or feeling. Images of these flood in my mind in a limitless amount of possibilities faster than I can record them sometimes. This gift of the imagination is too often neglected after the point where we create castles out of cardboard and pretend we are knights or princesses in magical lands. I try to recreate on paper the magic that happens in the imagination. It is a slight “record” of a flash of a story seen in the mind’s eye, which is an enjoyable challenge. Illustration is a way for me to reconnect to that playful freedom of creativity of childhood, and to connect with others as well. Hopefully, the reaction is a provoked giggle or two."
