Artist Statement FANE FLAWS
Fane graduated from The Wellington Polytechnic with a Diploma in Graphic Design in 1971. Since then he has spent; 13 years writing songs and playing in bands, (including Blerta, Spats, The Crocodiles & The Living Hamsters), 12 years directing many award winning music videos, TVC's, short films and animations, written a best-selling children’s book & CD (“The Underwatermelon Man & Other Unreasonable Rhymes”) and co-designed the book "Dick Frizzell The Painter". In 2010 he was inducted into ‘The Massey University Design Hall Of Fame’.
Fane has been exhibiting throughout Australia and New Zealand in various one person and group shows since 1980. He currently works with paint, print and sculptural assemblage.
He has been a full time professional artist since 2001 and his work is represented in private and public collections within N.Z. Australia, USA, Japan and the UK. He is presently based in Napier.
“I am essentially a ‘mark maker’ - everything else follows from whatever skill I have developed through drawing. I draw on anything from paper to demolition timber, with anything from pens to found objects - Of course there is always the problem of where to put the paint, let alone what colour….”
