Been out of the Imagekind loop lately.  But I just lost my job so now I have more time to do MY work.
Anybody know if artists can limit their editions on IK yet?

Wow. Does nobody know?  I heard there were some pretty big upgrades to IK lately.   I guess not it the realm of L.E.

You can limit your own editions, but IK involving themselves in it has never been on the horizon as far as I know of. It would be an administrative and legal nightmare. I wouldn't get your hopes up. ;)

How do you limit your own editions?

you keep track of how many have sold, and close it out when you reach your limited edition number

Though I am sorry to hear about your job, I'm very glad to see you back in the loop. I always have liked your work!

Auto processing (ie, Imagekind automatically making a print unavailable after hitting a desired threshold) limited editions is something we've thought about, but as mentioned above, The Force has not worked in our favor as of yet. Of course, we'll be sure to keep all our members updated should anything change.

For now, the best way to do it is to limit the number yourself. Several artists do this on Imagekind already with great success. Usually they put a note in the image description that says something to the effect of "limited to xx prints" and since we email you anytime there is purchase activity, and clearly show the number of times a print has been purchased, it's pretty easy to pull when the number reaches your desired amount.

I'm a big fan of having my cake and eating it too... So for me, I do both signed and numbered limited editions and open unsigned fine art prints of the same work.  You can view my site to see how I present these options.

Bottom line, if you can buy a signed limited edition of a Chagall and also buy an open edition archival print of the same image - why shouldn't you as an artist be able to offer the same range of offerings?

Some will argue that having both open and limited editions of the same piece is counter-intuitive.  The distinction between the two is the signature and perhaps locking in on just one size/format for your LE.

It's all up to you.  There are NO rules.  In my view at least :)

Me too! "Either/Or" wasn't working for me. John had the most logical presentation of both (at the same time!). Naturally, I freely stole the best parts of the idea and implemented it on my own site. But don't look for it; the new version isn't up yet because...

I decided to link every single image to specific places in both paypal and imagekind. That's a lot of links! Right when I was finishing up Ik introduced "Storefronts." Which meant all the links changed. Holy Moly. So I'm relinking and taking my time about it! If either of these companies change links again I'll need to rethink the whole approach.
