The term 'Small Format Art' has been around for a long time. I've always tended to do art at quite small format, even very tiny miniatures, but have also done murals and set design. To me the charm of small format art is that it gives the opportunity to have art fill a small spot with an interesting artwork on a wall, or piece of furniture - or can be grouped for an attractive display - or can be avidly collected with a mix of work by artists, all mediums, all subjects.
This is what I ended up doing. I loved the diversity and charm it added to my walls. Even when I was watching tv or involved in other activities I'd find myself looking at the 50 or so paintings on one of my walls, and drifting into their beauty. I found that visitors would come into my apartment, and head straight to my walls, to look. They became a conversation point. Instead of just being something to fill a blank wall, my collection became an interactive focal point. It was easy for people to instantly feel at home, cozy, in this environment.
When I grew more active in selling art online, in 2005, I found that the big and huge works were drowning out the smaller works, and searching for smaller works became almost impossible, so I began a group, and started promoting the tag 'SFA' - so that small format art, which I deemed to be art up till 14" in any one direction (framing not included in this dimension), and now many online selling sites use this term and acronym.
I have no doubt with people increasingly living an 'abbreviated' lifestyle, that they will discover the appeal of small format art.

That said, while this site, in the main, does not offer a good range of SFA, I feel that this format for art deserves singling out.
If anyone has decor that features SFA, please share those pictures with us. I have seen some wonderful displays.

I might also mention the small format art website - I will be revamping it in future, and featuring artist who work in this format, forums, and other things that pertain to all small artwork.

Regards,
~Jillian
