Hello!
What I am trying to achieve in this group is to promote scientific values in illustration of plants, and the images displayed should distinguish themselves from those in more general flower, wildflower, or nature photo/painting/drawing groups by embodying scientific values, in tandem with art. Botany is not just the study of plants, but the scientific study of plants, and accordingly, a botanical illustration is not just an image of a plant, but one done making use of the scientific method.
The method of science includes gathering basic facts and communicating observations that put the subject in its proper context. To be a true botanical illustration, then, your images should include notes on location and date, as a minimum. If you have something factual to say about the habitat or the characteristics (e.g. size, scent, animal associates, etc.) of the plant that is not obvious from the image, then that is even better (and I'll accept images with such information even though lacking location and date). Basically, there ought to be a caption for the image as might appear in a field guide or botany textbook.
Of course, images alone have aesthetic value independent of the needs of science, but that is not the purpose of this particular group. There are more general "Wildflower" and "Floral" groups on Imagekind already which fill that role.
I'll reiterate this from my prior post: You need not be an expert at plant identification to post to this group, however, you are an expert on where and when you photographed/drew/painted the plant, and it is essential that you share that information in your caption. If you didn't take notes at the time and don't remember the details, estimate as best you can and put the word "circa" (ca.) in front of unsure dates and "probably" or "possibly" in front of location or identification information you are not sure about. E.g. "Pine cone, probably of ponderosa pine, ca. August 1992, probably Glacier National Park, Montana."
Thanks for helping make this a distinctive, select, scientific group!
