Hello All,

Question: Why are you an artist?

I'll start.....

I just love color, form and anything visual.  Communicating with visual things is even more fun.  I paint and draw for my own entertainment.  The process is as much fun as the final product.  I do not earn my living with art at this time so I have a great deal of freedom.

I'm addicted to painting and learning new things about art. I also get great joy out of teaching others and selling a piece now and then.

Why are you an artist?

I just love the creative process. I've loved to draw since childhood, and it still fascinates me to this day to see an idea in my head fully realized on screen or in print. I got away from art for a while, but now I hope to get back into it and to improve.

God put a camera in my hands at an early age. My camera kept me from doing stupid things that young men get up to. Plus like you I love the creative process. My Dad used to paint cars, my Mom made wedding dresses. It took me some time to know it was meant for me to shoot pictures!

"I just want to make beautiful things" is how an African artist replied when an interviewer asked him that question. This answer has haunted me for years. I saw myself competing against zillions of artist all trying to get into museums or at least noted galleries. I never saw myself as talented enough. I trashed the competing motive and embraced this answer, I have great peace and enjoyment.

While working for the County of Los Angeles at LACMA back in the '60s I discovered the New York School Abstract Expressionist Painters, and identified with their "rule breaking and making ideas of painting, sculpting, assembling their creations" to suit their tastes and not necessarily the dictates of bystanders. In short they did it the way they FELT it. I remember asking Bernie Casey at one of his openings, "why does the circle have a such prominence in your work(s), to which he replied "BECAUSE" the proverbial answer to such a question! I am an artist. I use visual media, camera, paints, etc. to communicate with other Human BEANS messages of form, colours, compositions, lighting, perspectives, textures, and other tools of the trade provided by GOD for me to utilize in displaying the talents HE gave me.
