Artist Statement Photo journalist by heart -- that's how I describe myself. I've always been a friend of the camera since the age of 12. That's when my mom gave me a simple "point and click box" (no flash) that she got through a sales promotion while working at the local drugstore. My first picture with a professional camera -of a black iris in mom's flower garden- was taken at that age while Vacherie photographer J. Nash Porter held the camera steady for me (what a rush!). His studios in various cities he lived in bore names such as On Broadway (Washington) and On Claiborne (New Orleans); his favorite subjects were the Mardi Gras Indians, with a regular booth at the earlier Jazz & Heritage Festival. Unfortuantely, I never had the time to work with him and learn the trade properly. My philosophy about photography is that every "Kodak moment" in life should be preserved on film (now digital). My favorite subjects are statues (they don't move), blossoms, birds, landscape and wildlife. Special events add another deminsion in capturing human expressions. I love to share my images -- I hope you like them. Freeze the Moment! rvs
