Artist Statement My name is James S. Chen, also know as Chaospattern. I grow up roaming in the parks of the Forbidden City in Beijing, the ancient capital of China. Although Beijing has always been a forbidden ancient city, vast changes were being made during the years that I have lived there. The old capital was going through a revolution in changes due to the influence of western culture and technology. I have seen 1000 year old buildings taken down only to be replaced by modern sky-scrapers. Busy commercial streets full of small vendors were being replaced by western shopping malls. My parents left me to find a new life in America when I was 6 years old, seeing all the changes in China I too followed their path. I came to the United States when I was 11 years old to find my parents. That was the first major change in my life, a fast forward to live in a more advanced civilization. Growing up in the United States has given me a new vision in perspectives on how the mixing cultures are able to adapt to new ways of development through the use of technological advancement.

It has been said that thoughts have interrupted and interpreted reality. My art is a collection of worlds dealing with these thoughts in capturing the images of these emotions or expressions that are the grey areas between reality and imagination. These psychological expectations are used as a language to understand the mind, self, and the world. Abstraction, symbols, geometric, sythethic, materials all brings out the struggle between complexed human emotions and that fast paced future of overwhelming amount of informations and technology.
