Description Here is a Canada goose feeding with its flock. Some of the members were feeding on grass and some were feeding on fish and seaweed in the lovely Fox River of Northern Illinois, shown in the background. This particular member had assumed the temporary position of 'guard goose,' whose job is ensuring the safety of the others for flock predators, be they human or animal. In this particular situation, the human photographer had gained the confidence of this guard goose and was allowed to practically intermingle with the flock. We were in such close proximity, in fact, that this photograph did not require a telephoto lens. There were no threats or retreats from either side, and we all parted friends.
