Artist Statement I've photographed seriously since I was eighteen years old, that's over thirty years now, and I've been exploring back country wilderness for many more years than that. As an adult, I've travelled extensively around the American West, and in the European Alps, and not surprisingly a large portion of my portfolio consists of landscape images from these beautiful mountainous regions. I also enjoy shooting in cosmopolitan cities, like San Francisco and Paris, as well as more laid back locales in Mexico and Hawaii. My portfolio reflects my journeys to all of these places.

My first camera was my mother's Sears brand point-and-shoot. Because I couldn't do anything with it besides 'point and shoot', I learned early on to at least create strong compositions in the viewfinder--it was the one artistic factor I could control. I still see my early emphasis on strong composition continue to influence my work today.

Also tied in with creating a strong composition is my attempt to see and capture in my subject what Zen refers to as its 'thusness'--its absolute reality. Ultimately I consider all of my photographs, even my wide open landscapes, to be portraits. If they're 'landscapes', they are also portraits of place, portraits of the thusness of the forms that make up a place. I am always looking to capture an interesting portrait of a place, a thing, or even (and especially!) a person.
