Artist Statement London is the greatest city on earth, so many things to all of its people.
It a city of wealth and poverty, a city of immigrants and of ancient fireside Cockneys (still), a city of grandeur and of squalor. It is also a city of the day and a city of the night; one should not conflate the two, should not expect them to be one and the same.
At night, London becomes a changed place, an extreme version of itself. It has been my quest to capture this version and the images you will see here are the results of that quest.
If I have attempted to do anything more specific than to take a few good pictures, I guess it is to capture something at least of the night-time emptiness—the loneliness—of London, the sense (experience by most people who make the city their home at some time) of being an outsider looking in. There have been times when I have found myself so isolated and alone in the dead of night that it has been easy to forget that I am surrounded by nine million other souls. Most of them may be safe at home, of course, but we should not forget the vast nocturnal army of the city, those who eke out an existence while the rest of us sleep. These people appear in my photographs occasionally, too. Some indeed have expressed a wish to throw me and my camera in the Thames. A street photographer has sometimes to be light on his feet!
I love this city. The well never runs dry. London fascinates and appals in equal measure, but its allure is permanent and undimmed by the passage of time.
