Artist Statement Emmet Saunders was at one time secretary of the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Shoe Company of Naugatuck, Connecticut, founded in 1843 by Samuel L. Lewis and his brothers under the first license granted by Charles Goodyear four years after Goodyear discovered the rubber vulcanization process. The company was one of several that consolidated in the 1890s to become U.S. Rubber Co, which eventually became Uniroyal. Uniroyal still manufactures shoes and shoe soles in Naugatuck. Saunders resigned from his position as the company's assistant general manager in 1897 and moved to Indiana where he helped found and operate the Mishawaka Tire and Rubber Co. in Mishawaka, Ind. The company supplied tires to the Studebaker automobile manufacturing company located in nearby South Bend. Emmet and Louise Saunders gave large gifts to hospitals and hospital-related charities in Indiana during their lifetimes and had relatives in Naugatuck.
