Paul Speed, ozark, missouri Member Since December 2008 Artist Statement I am a commercial/fine art photographer based in southwest Missouri. My studio is an old rebuilt barn situated in the Ozark hills. Before moving to Missouri, I worked in advertising agencies in Chicago as an Art Director and Creative Director for about 15 years.
In 2006 I made the move south with my family to pursue a simpler, greener life for our two young boys, and ourselves. And to pursue a life long fascination I’ve had with photography.
As a photographer I am inspired by images that have a surreal storyline or subtext. Also, fabulous lighting. A friend at my studio once described my work as hyper-realistic, which I think fits much of what I like to achieve in my work. I love to super compose, plan and light the scene, but I like for the figures to seem natural and realistic in their setting. However unnatural it may be.
My camera is a Contax 645 medium format, equipped with a 28 mega-pixel Leaf digital back. Most all of my work is lit with strobes. This combination ensures intense detail and sharpness even at the largest print size.
Print prices are marked up to reflect my desire to continue to be able to create work that doesn’t necessarily sell frozen yogurt.
