Artist Statement Schooled in evolutionary biology, I was largely self taught in the art of photography. Fortunately, I am a quick study, but more fortunately, I have been extremely lucky in some of the people whom I have crossed my paths with thusfar in my life.
As a boy, I had the good fortune of growing up next door to an amazing Magnum photographer, Paul Fusco, who taught me how to make great photographic images by telling a unique story with every photograph. As a young man I took a class with freelance photographer Jim Zuckerman, who taught me how to use the relatively new medium of digital photography to allow myself to fully express my version of nature as fine art. Finally, I was allowed to work in India as a photography assistant to National Geographic photographer Steve Winter, who taught me how to consistently get amazing images in the field.
All of these experiences have helped to teach me that there are no set rules in photography. It isn't written anywhere that a photographer may not artistically manipulate an image before or after it is taken. Such rules don't exist in other forms art. In that respect, photography is really no different from oils or watercolor or any other art form where the artist is only limited by the scope of his or her imagination.
