Description Digital painting created by Second Glance Digital Art. Two photos are merged together to create a vision of a staircase leading up to an ancient palace in this oddly colorful nebula. The supernova remnant IC 443, also known as the Jellyfish nebula, is particularly interesting because it provides a look into how stellar explosions interact with their environment. It can be found near the star Eta Geminorum, which lies near Castor, one of the twins in the constellation Gemini. Just like human beings, stars have a life cycle -- they are born, mature and eventually die. The manner in which stars die depends on their mass. Stars with mass similar to the sun typically become planetary nebulae at the end of their lives, whereas stars with many times the sun's mass explode as supernovae. IC 443 is the remains of a star that went supernova somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago. The blast from the supernova sent out shock waves that traveled through space, sweeping up and heating the surrounding gas and dust in the interstellar medium, and creating the supernova remnant seen in this image.*Photo credit: This design was possible in part thanks to the images taken and allowed for me to use by NASAs Hubble Space Telescope. LeAnn Lunzer, St. Paul, Mn Member Since April 2013 Artist Statement I have lived, worked and visited many cities and states in America and have found beauty in every corner of our country. I enjoy the simple things, and feel closer to God when I take time to appreciate the details. I have dabbled in just about every medium I can think of and have always considered myself an artist since I first picked up a crayon. I really enjoy photographing nature and then transforming those photos into digital paintings with my computer.
I have sold my art and crafts at boutiques and craft shows around the state. I hope my art will inspire you to stop and take a second glance at the beauty that surrounds us; all the colors, shapes and variety of life that is right outside our door if we just stop for a moment to look for it.
