Description Roberts Creek Historic School House #37 (Oregon) 1873 - 1959. (Photographed November 2008)...................................On my way to town the other day, I decided to take a back road that I hadnt been on for many many years. I was highly rewarded for this last minute decision because as I came around one of the curves in the road, there it was, this beautiful old structure, somewhat hidden but poised as if waiting for me to discover it. Had I taken that road just a month before, I probably wouldnt have noticed it with all of the leaves still on the trees. But as I pulled over and backed up to get a better look, I could hardly contain myself. When I finally exhaled, I was doubly excited when I realized that I hadnt forgotten my camera. I climbed over the fence and as I started walking towards this beautiful old building, I felt saddened by its abandoned condition, and as if it realized my melancholy, it pulled my thoughts towards it. To the past. Gazing up at the bell tower, I could almost hear its mighty call for recess, summoning the glorious laughter of little children as they anxiously rushed through the too small doors, out to play under its watchful eye. I couldnt help but feel a deep sense of respect for the poor dilapidated old thing, you see, as I circled around back I discovered that a good portion of the right rear of the building and the inside had been severely burned. Probably by vandals. Yet there it stood with great fortitude despite all of the odds against it, age, weather, a deep gashing of wounds, unwilling to relinquish its stand though alone and forgotten with time. Not really so different with the elderly, is what I thought, tucked away in retirement homes. Wishing to be needed or thought of again.I didnt dare go inside for fear that it would decide at that very moment to collapse, but I wandered about for quite some time, imagining what it must have been like in its younger years
Sandra Jean, Pacific Northwest Member Since March 2008 Artist Statement It's a wonderful gift to be given the freedom to express ourselves through the diverse mediums of art. I believe that a creative spirit dwells within the depths of each human being and that some of the greatest joys in life come from seeking and discovering what our inherent gifts are. And then comes the exhilaration of cultivating and developing those gifts in a way that not only aids us in soulfully defining who we are, but at the same time benefits and touches the lives of others in some positive way. I have always been passionate about the arts and in the past couple of years have discovered the extremely insightful and therapeutic realm of digital painting, graphic design and photography, bouncing from one to the other in subject matter and self development. Always seeking to create and capture something different from what is considered usual and always striving to do better.
On a more personal note, God and my family come before all things. In the arts, music is my first love, I am an avid reader and a lover of the outdoors and nature in all of its vibrant and moody changes and often times my artwork is a reflection of what is currently moving me.
