Artist Statement Lynette Seiter is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah
Lynette spent her childhood in the suburbs of Salt Lake City. Her father went to the city everyday to work at the telephone company and her mother was a homemaker of the 50’s. Life was good as the youngest and only girl of three children. Lynette started taking dancing lessons at an early age. She studied, at one time or another, baton twirling, modern dance, jazz, tap and ballet. Tap and ballet stuck. She continued to study tap for 12 years and Ballet for 15.
Lynette started painting at the age of 12, when she received an art kit for Christmas. The kit had oil paints, watercolors, pastels and drawing equipment. There was an instruction booklet for each medium and she studied and tried each one. She didn’t realize that she had a special talent for art until when in 9th grade she took an art class because she had a back operation and couldn’t take PE for one semester. Every concept seemed natural and easy and the teacher was constantly using her work as examples. The day that she had to check out of the art class and go back to PE, her art teacher said, “Do you want to see a grown man cry?”
She found she had a talent for singing and studied voice with Joanne Ottley, the wife of the director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. She sang and soloed with every choir she was in at Olympus High School. She also got the lead role in the musical Brigadoon that the high school put on.
Because all of her elective classes in high school were taken up with music and dance classes, she did oil painting, drawing and working with pastels on her own at home. While on vacations or just weekends at the family ranch in Heber, she would draw the things around her. One time while visiting her professional musician uncle in Los Angeles, she got up before everyone else and did a drawing of his grand piano. She attended Brigham Young University. She met her sweetheart in Heber City while they were both attending BYU. They married in 1972. After graduating with a degree in Child Development, she went back to BYU and studied Oil Painting. After both of them had graduated from BYU they moved to American Fork where her husband eventually began his own dental laboratory business.
She put the paints away for the next twenty years while she raised nine
children. They have 5 boys and 4 girls. When her last child was 4, she started painting again. After painting for a few years she quit and went back to school and studied music. After that she began painting again, studying books, taking art courses and workshops. She enjoys painting a variety of subjects. She has done portraits of her children and some commissioned portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes and flowers and gardens. She paints in the realistic style and paints mainly from photographs she takes herself.
