Description Samurai Yamaji Shogen Masakuni by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861), master of ukiyo-e style of Japanese woodblock prints. A powerful warrior, Yamaji Shogen brandishes his long sword in a fierce battle with an unseen opponent. The presence of blooming azalea branches in this composition was intended by Kuniyoshi, according to a traditional symbolism, to indicate subtly that this was the great samurai's last fight.
