Artist Statement

Drew Makepeace bought his first SLR camera when he was 16 and took it on a family trip to Europe, preferring to return home with photographs, rather than knickknacks, as souvenirs. For the next fifteen years he shot thousands of photographs in travels in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. This provided sufficient material for small exhibits in Vancouver at The Naam restaurant and at Starbucks in Yaletown, as well as participation in group exhibits at the Exposure Gallery.

In 2003 Drew switched to digital photography, which redoubled his enthusiasm for photography and enabled much more experimentation. A move to Penticton, BC, afforded new landscapes and cityscapes as photographic subject matter. The economy of digital photography also allowed him to document each day of the demolition of the SuperValu grocery store in 2006. This resulted in the accumulation of 2000 images and culminated in an exhibit for the Penticton Arts Council in June 2006.

Less than a year later Drew similarly documented of dry-cleaning shop, also resulting in 2000 images, but only a few have been displayed thus far. Drew continues to target Mid-century modern buildings for future projects.
