Description This shot of a Firewheel (Indian Blanket) flower was taken near Fort Fisher State Historic Site. The site is located on a peninsula south of Wilmington, NC with the Cape Fear River on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. A great place for history and nature.
Ben Kemp, Corinth, NY Member Since November 2007 Artist Statement My family settled in the Adirondack Foothills in the early 1800's. I have recently moved to a home inside the Adirondack Park. The Adirondack Park is 6 Million Acres of streams, rivers, mountains, lakes, valleys and history. I make outdoor trips for hiking, biking and kayaking into different areas of the Adirondack Park as well as the Catskill Park in New York, the Green Mtns of Vermont and the Taconic Mtns of Mass.. I have traveled to other destinations on the East Coast as well, such as Great Smoky Mtns National Park, Shenandoah National Park, Green Mountain National Forest, White Mountain National Forest, Acadia National Park, Niagara Falls, the Blue Ridge Parkway etc. I have always had a passion for the outdoors, and I try to convey that passion through photos that show the natural splendor of nature. It seems as though many people in todays fast paced world have lost touch with their roots. Nature can allow us to discover things about ourselves that we didn't even know. It opens our eyes to the bigger picture of life on this earth and how we fit into it. If my photography is able to spark interest and contemplation of these things in people then it is a success. Thanks for visiting my work.
"Before all else a work of art is the creation of love, love for the subject and for the medium second. Love is the fundamental necessity underlying the need to create, underlying the emotion that gives it form, and from which grows the finished product that is presented to the world. Love is the general criterion by which the rare photograph is judged. It must contain it to be not less than the best of which the photographer is capable." - Eliot Porter
"A picture is the expression of an impression. If the beautiful were not in us, how would we ever recognize it ?" -Ernst Haas
Note: If there are any photo subjects (i.e. Mtns, towns, lakes) you are interested in the Adirondack Park or nearby, let me know I can check my archives and offer them for sale.
