Artist Statement Of kurdish and arabic origins, half Turk by choice, Azzedine Jamal likes to define himself as a 21st century Orientalist. But unlike Delacroix or Ingres who painted ottoman fantasies, he chose to shoot actual middle-eastern people: turkish construction workers, syrian rebels, qatari dockers, Istanbul party girls or kurdish women demonstrators… His artistic ambition involves sharp, impressive self-portraits, embodying his cardinal values: manhood, strength, pride, brotherhood. Born in Paris, France, Azzedine Jamal is now also living in the europe, where he found new cities, new faces and new deserts to photograph. There as in the Middle-East, he’s driving for a never-ending road-trip
