Every year a few weeks before Christmas, my father would haul out his cutting tools and some old brown linoleum and start carving his Christmas card design for that year on the old butternut desk. I suspect that's where a lot of the gouges came from. As a boy I loved to sit by him, smell the linoleum and watch the reindeer or trees or pipers take shape. In 1945 he did a musical scale with the dot dot dash for "V" for victory.
