Eric De Llamas, Corpus Christi, TX
Member Since May 2012
Artist Statement Eric de Llamas is a Texas-based artist, originally from the Los Encinos neighborhood of the city of Corpus Christi. The south Texas environment surrounded the artist with imagery that informed him about Catholicism and his Hispanic heritage.

Later in his childhood, he moved with his family to north Texas in the white suburbs of the Dallas metropolitan area. No longer surrounded by a Hispanic presence, the artist now lived in an area where the majority of the population was white. Exposure to the new cultural influences in Dallas while still a young adolescent led to a dichotomy between the two cultures; one that he continues to resolve within himself.

As a result, the artist has primarily focused on identity politics, making work that creates a commentary on the issues of Mexican Catholicism, Catholic symbolism, national identity, narco culture, high and low art, theology, and politics.

His work utilizes both a conceptual and narrative format, producing artwork with influences from Manuel Ocampo, Jose Guadalupe Posada, AJ Fosik, Robyn O'Neil, David Hammons, Kihinde Wiley, Andy Warhol, and Salvador Dali. In additiion to specific artists, his work references pop surrealism, Hispanic folk art, Spanish Colonial art, Catholic iconography, and the European Masters of the Baroque era.
