Ned Flaherty grew up in the gritty St. James Gate section of Dublin with a bedroom window that overlooked the Guinness Beer Factory. Aside from doodling action shots of his favorite footballer (soccer) Diego Maradona on school notebooks, Ned did not express any inclinations as an artist until later in life when his family immigrated to South Boston for a brief time, eventually settling in the North Shore. He was a fisherman for five years, during which time he would draw portraits of fellow crewmembers while at sea. People encouraged him to pursue his talents, but Ned never felt privileged enough to make a living as an artist. With the closing of fisheries, Ned decided it was time for a career change. He spent an entire summer on Plum Island painting landscapes. He sold all twenty of them out of the back of his pickup truck in a single weekend. He spent the money on a two-month trip to the Aaron Islands. He returned with fifty paintings. All of which sold over the course of the next summer, again from the back of his 1990 Toyota pickup. Despite the popularity of his work, his career suffered as a result of local galleries shunning his street-seller tactics. Ned continues to travel and sell his paintings in person. He is excited to have recently discovered Etsy. It’s cheaper than filling his tank in order to sell work. Ned also enjoys camping and surfing.
