Artist Statement My work in Design and Ethnography explains where a curiosity about the mundane, as well as the unusual, comes from. When my wife and I were preparing to move to China we were confronted by anxieties and alarmist reactions from the people we love and admire. Which led me to investigate: why do people believe ideas 'before seeing'?

This project originated from my personal need to reconcile the world 'as you learn about it, say from CNN', and the world 'as it truly is'. More specifically this catalog stems from my determination to identify what makes the strangeness of a culture familiar to behold.

In this regard the composition, the photographers bias, technical ability, and pace of discovery are all constraints that cannot be removed the resulting image. They are brought to bear on the image as it is captured at the speed of walking. The urge to introduce a tripod or additional light has been resisted, with the aim of capturing 'available light'.
