Terry Jorgensen, Cubao, Philippines Member Since October 2012 Artist Statement Terry Jorgensen is a professional fashion photographer with 24 years experience in the fashion industry. His work has appeared in several major fashion magazines in the US. Terry is really grateful that he got started in photography back in the day when film and transparencies were your only choices, before the digital age. He feels that by learning back then really helped him understand on how to get the images done right in the camera.
Terry got his start back in the early 80's when a friend of his brought over a new camera he had just gotten. He let Terry try it out, and that's all it took. His 1st camera was a Pentax K1000. The camera had no bells and whistles on it, totally manual camera.
Terry started taking pictures of various professional sporting events in Los Angeles. He would read whatever he could about photography and subscribe to several different photog magazines. When Terry made the leap into the pro ranks he started doing weddings on weekends. When started making more money doing weddings, than he did in 40hr work week, he left the comfort of that security and benefits.
After doing weddings for about 3 years, he was becoming bored with Weddings and was afraid that he had made the wrong decision about leaving his steady job. He wanted to do something more creative. That's when he met the man who would change his life forever. Terry was shooting at a wedding one day and one of the guest was an older gentleman that invited Terry to his studio, and quickly became Terry's mentor. He took Terry under his wings and taught him about all the different types of lighting and creating different types of effects that can be created. But it was not free. Terry had to sweep floors, clean up the darkroom, go to the lab and go for coffee. One thing that his mentor always told him was, he needed to give back what was given to him. Terry at the time didn't understand what his mentor meant by that.
Now 24 years later, after having had his success he now lives in the Philippines with his Filipino wife of 7 years he met in Los Angeles, Terry is conducting photography workshops inspiring young and old photogs to see the world through a camera lens. After several of his students told him he changed their life by giving them confidence, Terry now knew what his mentor was talking about when he told him that he needed to give back what was given to him. Now he enjoys just creating art. Thinking outside the box, and pushing the boundries of his confort zone, and conducting his workshops.
