Artist Statement ABOUT ME AND MY WORK

I am a Brazilian visual artist, a painter, mainly.
I began painting by myself when c. 17 years old, when I saw a friend painting. Color had always been a major issue for me. When I saw that one could spread with a brush a large amount of paint on canvas – large when compared to colored pencils or pens – it was an epiphany!
At first, there were non representational works, which provided me with an invaluable basis for handling color.
Some years later, came representational paintings: color plus a meaningful line. Therefore I began to unite, to balance, form, drawing, with color. And often this color quite far from the actual color; and not by chance, I have always been partial to the “Fauves”. The stain, the line – in a way, rational – with color – irrational. Landscapes, painting from live models. More recently, still lifes, which are not at all still, then still lifes in indoor settings or in landscapes, or even landscapes on their own – sceneries to walk into.
A few years ago, I went back, in parallel, to non representational paintings, where there is no drawing, there is only color to structure the canvas space. The line of the drawing disappears as a limit, the sole limit, physical, is the canvas border.
Lately I have also been manipulating images made by myself – photos, drawings, paintings – in the computer, with very promising outcomes in digital art.
