Description In Navajo country, at the bottom of Canyon de Chelly is one of my favorite Anasazi Cliff dwellings- Antelope House. Located near the town of Chinle in Northeast Arizona, Antelope House is about 50 miles southwest of the Four Corners, where Arizona, Utah Colorado and New Mexico marks the center of the ancient Native American culture known by the Hopi as the 'Ancient Ones'. Built around A.D. 1100, it was abandoned by the mid-1300s along with the nearby White House ruin.. It's name is due to a pictograph of a running antelope painted on the canyon wall nearby.I began this original wall art referencing photographs I took, before hand-carving a bas-relief sculpture in solid Honduran mahogany. The fine grain and hard surface of the wood helps me capture the essence of the rock surface of the canyon and the detail of the stones used by the Anasazi who built this magnificent dwelling so many centuries ago.
