Artist Statement

In 2000, the development of my God given talent as a painter is similar to the three step life process of a butterfly; caterpillar, cocoon and the birth of the most beautiful and “free” creature the world has ever seen.

Caterpillar
As a child, the artistic seed was implanted in me from my father who as an artist never pursued his dream of becoming an architect, but did enjoy esthetic beauty and music. I loved all forms of expressive arts but was encouraged by my parents to pursue a more secure career path. So, off I went off to college to study Finance and Economics and because I am good in math and have great people skills, I was expected to make a good lawyer, business guru or an expert money maker. I now choose to follow my heart and paint a new path for myself.

Cocoon
I started to draw abstract designs on cue cards in April 2000, which I was also using to study business law. The cue cards became my first canvas. As a self taught artist, I did not think about what I was drawing. I just drew and painted. I enjoyed posting my abstract designs in my dorm room and listening to all the ideas and images that my schoolmates saw in them. They were like those pictures therapist use to ask what you see and from there, find the root to your problems and discover your personality. One year went by and I painted a fruit basket and in that same year painted a painting specifically for my grandmother, with the colors of the Caribbean, a river floating through and pottery coming from the earth. This painting depicted the abundance of love I experienced with my grandmother as a child in the Dominican Republic when we had so little in material terms but so much abundance in terms of warmth and love.
Painted, in 2003, with no preconceived ideas the following work titled “Chief Eye” was inspired by an Asian painting I saw in a calendar. My painting represents the all Seeing Eye, the higher self and the road to enlightenment. This road has not been an easy one, I have encountered many challenges and opportunities, but I am thankful to experience them all and my understanding of its importance in bringing me to where I am today.

Butterfly
After miraculously surviving an accident in 2004, I started to draw butterflies, three butterflies all flying in the sky. The number three is a very significant number in the history of mankind and religion. I saw it as a message from the Divine that my evolution was complete. From that point on I have not stopped painting. My most recent body of work include; butterflies, imaginative flowers, more abstract designs to show inner growth and love of life, through vibrant colors. My most recent work “Step by Step”, was a painting inspired by a conversation with a friend who is an educator as to how you achieve goals, inevitably everything in life is achieved step by step. This is why I am an artist today.

My mission as an artist is to make the world a better and more beautiful place to live in through positive creative contributions. To bring happiness, joy and unity to all humanity through the beauty and creative energy that touches the lives of all those who view the art created by my spirit, allowing the viewer to capture a glimpse of themselves in every painting created.
