Artist Statement While studying Slavistik at the Freie Universitaet Berlin, I began taking night classes in drawing and painting at the Volkshochschule Schoeneberg, offered by professors from the Akademie der Kuenste. I exhibited both oil and acrylic paintings at some of the smaller galleries at the time. My work at that time had been informed by German Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Realism)

After a 15 year hiatus, I have been engaged for the past few years in charcoal and soft pastel studies of the human figure. I saw my original attraction to visual arts as an extension as of my passion for languages: through the dry study of grammar, one hopes to someday arrive at fluid and voluptuous expression. In my drawings, by focusing on small areas of existence, I aim to achieve a whole worthy of some contemplation.
