Artist Statement Welcome to my online gallery.

I spent ten years living in Japan studying budo (martial arts). This study turned out to be about mortality, infinity and the moral questions that emerge from this. Much of my photography is a result of this study.

I also write and in 2012, a book that I co-authored was released titled 'The Art of Life and Death'. It details some of the lessons learnt whilst studying in Japan and features some of my prose, poetry and a few photos.

You can find the book here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/080484304X

Artistically, I am looking for space, depth, spontaneity and suggestion. Besides budo, other Japanese influences include Noh theatre, film director Akira Kurosawa and haiku.

I have come to believe that art is a kind of luck - which is probably why I have no interest in skill or technical knowledge. I simply point, shoot and, if needed, edit for effect.

Though I am not completely averse to colour, black & white photography seems more suited to what I am striving for so I tend to favour it a bit more.

If you have any questions, don't be shy. You can message me through Imagekind or contact me through sulaymen@hotmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you.
