one almostwinter night
winter was around the corner just about to settle in here on the peninsula the sun if it shines at all is an attenuated version of itself throwing pale light and little heat
the house was chill the fireplace empty requiring a trip to the woodpile that middecember night the wind blew up from the lake essence of pine on its breath i recalled another night a dream drenched in that perfume
we'd ripped the veils off our souls the clothes off our bodies crickets chirped and the summer moon smiled in through open windows as falling into a different reality we became each other
a green wave of longing rode that memory washing over me and i forgetting the coming winter and the wood detoured to the field that leads to the lake following the song and scent of the pines the crickets were ghosts but the bleachedbone moon was still smiling i stood looking lakeward to the pines saw your eyes shining in the sky and closing mine breathed in as much of you as i could
until hammering heart shattered dream cold bit skin through sweater driving me back toward the woodpile and another night of missing you ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
A peaceful moon shines over a pine forest on an autumn night in rural Minnesota.
