Three Cheers for Me
Here I sit in the parking lot of the playhouse, stuck, car dead, waiting for Triple A. This bench isn't at all comfy but at least there's a light; otherwise I'd be drowned in darkness, just me and these three rocks. I wonder who put them here, neatly lined up in a row on the paving stones. Perhaps it was some overly devout Christian celebrating the trinity. Alternatively it could have been some flitty Wiccan invoking the power of three. I suppose it could be gallows humor - three on a match and all that, or an architect reminding the world of the importance of triangulation, or a reference to that old saw third time's the charm - though there's not a damn thing charming about sitting here alone waiting for a tow truck. Or maybe they're the caretaker's pet rocks. Who the hell knows? And now my mind's off and running, thinking of everything that comes in threes: three French hens, three-piece suit, the three R's, the three primary colors, Three Coins in the Fountain, The Three Faces of Eve, the Three Wise Men, the Three Musketeers, the Three Stooges, the Three Weird Sisters, the Three Little Pigs, the Three Billygoats Gruff, the Three Bears. And lets not forget Old King Cole and his fiddlers three, playing rub a dub dub three men in a tub, yes sir yes sir three bags full. Enough! Enough of this three-ring circus! All I want is to be home and dry, not sitting here on a hard slat bench with nothing but a dead car and three stupid rocks for company. And if I ever get there, to celebrate this extremely unmomentous occasion I'm going to pour myself three fingers of brandy - three sheets to the wind! and go to bed. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
