gulled
out and about along the atlantic soft summer breezes in the night and there - abandoned? forgotten? at the place where the road meets the sea a bicycle a man's
my imagination always ripe for romantic speculation conjures a lonely pilgrim soul also searching for peace or adventure or perhaps another pilgrim soul
no sooner does this thought halfwish really form than the quiet of blue sky blue water is shattered by the screech of an insomniac gull mocking derisive shut up cinderella!
i smile wryly and walk on then stopping to look back at the bike think what if some despairing soul's had enough of it all and is even now hands trembling but resolute tying an ankle to an stone preparatory to a seawall leap?
and goddamn if that same gull doesn't return fly right past my shoulder and scream shut up virginia! i shiver thinking i've at last lost my mind and continue oh perhaps another fifty feet and turn back once more
suddenly the invisible clockhands spin whirling me back a quarter century and i remember everything about that sunny day right here on this island
how we took the training wheels off and you went wobbly then confident flying down the driveway laughing shouting look i'm a big boy now!
the tears explode and as i stand stockstill sobbing an entire flock of gulls arises from nowhere their madlyflapping wings sounding like nothing so much as applause ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
