Artist Statement FINE ART
With her affinity for vibrant colour and her delicate attention to the play of light and shadow, Wanda's paintings evoke a gentle yet passionate view of her surroundings and imagination. Whether that view is inspired by the serenity and beauty of a warm summer sunset, or a startling depiction of a tearful clown, her images are captured with the intention of being shared and enjoyed by others.
Her many years of work in Canadian theatre as an actor, playwright and director have given her a strong foundation and appreciation the diversity of the creative spirit. As an artist with a vision impairment, Wanda has been a strong advocate for artists with disabilities in Canada for more than twenty years.
Wanda is the creator of Reddragon Designs and Octoberchild Creations which is comprised of original watercolours, oils, acrylics, giclée and photography. Limited edition prints, graphics on shirts, bags, plaques and other promotional items are available.
THEATRE
Wanda studied theatre at York University and Seneca College in Toronto 1999-2001). She is a versatile artist active in the Toronto theatre community, as actor, director and playwright. From 2001-2007 she was president of the Glenvale Players, a community theatre organization mandated to develop and exhibit the talents of blind and vision impaired artists. Over the years Wanda has written and developed many productions for Glenvale. As well, she has participated as a playwright in The New Ideas Festival 2005, (Practicing Art), and as an actor in Summerworks 2006 (Oops). In addition she has experience in production, sound design, public relations and stage management. In 2006 Wanda acted in the Independent Film productions Canapé, (B2B Productions), a short film and the feature length film Bad Karma, (Redemption Films) as actor, script editor and Director. Miss Fitzgerald is a strong advocate for the rights and opportunities of disabled artists in theatre, film and television. She has also contributed related articles on this subject for publications such as Canadian Theatre Review. In 2007 Wanda mounted Common Criminal at the London Fringe Festival and a reprised version of the performance with full point of view live audio description in 2008. In 2009 and 2010 she assisted in developing integrated audio description programs with Clay and Paper theatre. Presently she continues to work on a diverse array of theatre and film projects.
Wanda studied art at Georgian College in Owen Sound Ontario, and has extensive experience in design and artwork since 1984. Wanda also studied Journalism at Conestoga College (1987-1989) and theatre at York University and Seneca College in Toronto (1999-2001).
