Description The Southern carmine bee-eater occurs fromKwaZulu-NatalandNamibiatoGabon, the easternDemocratic Republic of the CongoandKenya. The bee-eater is amigratoryspecies, spending the breeding season, between August and November, inZimbabweandZambia, before moving as far south asSouth Africafor the summer months, and then migrating toEquatorial Africafrom March to August. Their diet is made up primarily ofbeesand other flyinginsects, and their major hunting strategy involveshawkingflying insects from perch. Perches may include branches of vegetation or even the backs of large animals, such as thekori bustard. They are attracted towildfiresbecause of the flushedinsects, and are often seen circling high in the air. They circle larger animals and even cars to catch the insects that are trying to escape.
