Artist Statement Melanie was born in Dublin, Ireland, and emmigrated to the United States in the 1970s. From early childhood she has been interested in nature, drawing and how people interact with the world. She trained as an architect and studies the natural rules of the land for insight into how people co-exist with Nature.

She learnt to draw in classical methods through her architectural studies, and has completed the Certificate of Botanical Illustration from the Morton Arboretum. The Art of Scientific Illustration is to explain through drawings what cameras or our eyes cannot see in beautiful ways. As an avid observer of nature, she seeks to present nature accurately yet, artistically.

Here are some of her likes: her husband, dogs, reading, playing games, playing in the snow, writing letters, tromping through the woods, bonfires, red wine, bad scary movies from the ‘50s, visiting family and friends, going for exploration drives in new parts of the world, sailing, a good meal, a good laugh, the smell of cut grass, making art and growing things.

Art inspirations: the form and structure of how things grow; odd shaped plants; colour combinations; small details; depicting movement of plants; humour; quotations that bring visual puns to mind; nature photography; graphics and shapes.

Artist statement: "I don’t really have one. It just happens".
