Artist Statement I have been taking photos all my life. I started with my father's Samoca rangefinder bought by him in Aden in 1962 after his return from India, then moved on to my first SLR (a Nikon F301) with which I won the Portuguese Tourist Board Photographic Competition in 1984. In the meantime I was developing projects for CD covers with Deutsche Grammophon.
My work has been exhibited in several art galleries both in Lisbon and in the United Kingdom.
I always dreamt of digital photography as I felt that the set up of film, developing, dark chamber and chemicals was too elaborate; so, since 2003 ,I have been shooting with the superlative Sigma SD9. I took part in the development of the Foveon sensor as a beta tester for their software and participated in numerous technological and artistic discussions in forums like dpreview, photonet, photosig, flickr, etc.
My work was commissioned by Sanctuary Records to provide stock photographs for their CDs artwork.
I am drawn to photography because of its essence, the moment of capture, the immediate framing, the pre-thought process, the feel that there is someone alive and thinking behind the camera at any time.
My photos are rarely cropped, no HDR, no heavy Photoshop, bar some levels and a bit of "salt & pepper" for web viewing. My images always show exactly what happened at that particular moment, what I thought it was beautiful at that moment, relevant enough to be "frozen" forever and to be unveiled to everyone.
I have been based in Manchester, United Kingdom for the past 15 years.
