Description Raven is telling us not to take life so seriously while Eagle is carrying our prayers to the Creator. Both Eagle and Raven have a Salmon eye because in pairs they represent life and luck. In the centre Frog is sharing knowledge and helping everyone connect. In the left, Raven's wing, we have Killer Whale sharing his love, passion and loyalty, while Bear shows the importance of motherhood and the Creator's left hand supports us. In the right, Eagle's wing, we have Beaver showing us how to build a solid foundation, while Wolf is giving us strength and wisdom, and the Creator's right hand guides us. At the base in the legs and tail we have the Watchmen that alert us of any happenings we should be aware of. In the very centre we have the Medicine Wheel which represents the vision of the Medicine Wheel in that all things and beings on the Earth are related and, therefore, must be in harmony for the Earth to be balanced.
Lon French, Esquimalt Member Since November 2013 Artist Statement I’m a Haida graphic artist that has been doing Haida art since the end of 2012. At that time, I decided I needed to change the direction of my life. This is when I started learning about my family from Haida Gwaii. I researched Haida art and learned the basic forms. Then I started playing with designs and developed my own style. That style has evolved and continues to evolve the more I do. I have tried to stay traditional and have on the most part but feel that to grow as an artist I must be open to change. As I continue on my new path I’ll try new things and learn more about tradition also and that will reflect in my work. Mostly, I’m self taught but I was also initially taught for a short time by George Hunt Jr. at S J Willis Secondary back in the early ‘80s. I hope you enjoy my designs and follow my journey of discovery in the world of Haida art.
