Description The cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) is an annual flowering plant native to Europe. In the past, it often grew as a weed in cornfields, from which its name originated. From the overuse of herbicides, it has become endangered in its native habitat. Through introduction as an ornamental plant in gardens, Centaurea cyanus is now also naturalized in many other areas of the world, including North America and parts of Australia. The flowers are usually an intense blue color with various cultivars of pink, purple, white, pink, lavender, and dark maroon. Once established in a garden, cornflowers will self-seed and return year after year. Cutting the flowers causes cornflower plants to bush out.
