At the very the bottom of this sad collection of vitae interruptus lay something wrapped in a blizzard of tissue. I unfolded the thin leaves of gauzy paper but could not imagine what awaited discovery.
It was a rose, long dead; it was clear I had taken some pains to preserve it. Its brittle petals, though wrinkled, still held a good bit of color, frozen as they were in the act of unfurling; the stem was sturdy, unbent. Lifting it gently, I combed through memories as I studied it, trying to recall the whys and wherefores of this treasure.
Nothing surfaced.
I am not one obsessed with material keepsakes; whatever prompted this careful embalming must have been somewhat momentous. But then, I have forgot so much.
I cannot recall the Latin names for flowers I grew and tended for a dozen years, nor my last phone number before the current one, though I lived with it for seven years. The first tentative touch of desire, the last time I was properly, thoroughly kissed, the feel of a lover's skin on mine - all swirled away in a cyclone of amnesia. Is it any wonder I cannot recall the importance of this husk here in my hands, when the memory of love is lost? Excerpted from Exhumation, copyright 2015 RC deWinter
