Description The chapel, the guest quarters, the refectory, the entrance: This could be the first or the last view you get when visiting the Abbey of Gethsemani in the countryside of Kentucky. This was Brother Louie/Thomas Mertons first and last view. Heres how it works: You can be entering the monastery, a novice, or leaving it, a monk returning to the world outside. You can be a visitor, a retreatant, a wanderer, a worshipper. You can be approaching with earnest yearning and a profound, overarching love, or leaving with eager anticipation, maybe grief, maybe even a dry spirit, ennui, boredom, restlessness. Whatever it is for you, that is where you are, and where you are going. This moment, captured in this image, is the moment of both . . . and. . . We all have such moments. When they come: Stop. Look out the window. Check the rear-view mirror. Go with God.
Joy Bannerman, San Diego, CA Member Since March 2008 Artist Statement
JOY BANNERMAN has been designated a Third Century Artist by the North Carolina Arts Council and formerly maintained "Studio M", a New Orleans gallery in the Magazine Street shopping district. She is an ecologist as well as artist, and these strands of nature and culture give the distinctive vision and depth to her art. She is a former associate professor in the Department of Arts and Ideas at the University of North Carolina-Asheville.
Bannerman works in the interface between photographic art and paintings, using oil pastels, acrylics, metallic pens, and watercolor media. The range of her work extends from realistic images to those which integrate expressionism with representational points of the familiar. She brings to her artistic creations a depth and breadth of experience as (in no particular rank or order) wildlands-explorer, medical botanist, parent, educator, garden designer, musician, and contemplative.
Bannerman works closely with individuals, interior designers, garden designers, and architects to select or create commissioned works that enhance the pleasure, beauty, functionality, and appropriate energetics for any home, office, or public setting. These include an ever-evolving selection of paintings on canvas and board, archival prints, photographic art, and mixed-media two and three dimensional creations.
