Artist Statement Up Close: Looking a bit strange at such close range

I like to look at the world around me up close, discovering details that are not visible from further away. Instead of forests in the distance, I’m fascinated by the detail in a single leaf. I look at the wonder that resulted in a leaf, thinking of how it began and then grew into this complex piece of life.

The origin of this comes from an encounter with artist John Maakestad I was eight at the time and tagged along with my parents to a presentation given by John. Giggles filled the room when he displayed his first photo to the group. To put it semi-politely, we saw a piece of dung on the screen. The next photo was of the same object, but this time, taken from further away. More giggles followed as we now knew the “dung” was actually a peony bush shoot, barely sprouting out of the dirt and looking very strange at such close range. It was quite a lesson in looking at the world around us.

Colorful: Visual Fuel

I love color. Color gives me “visual fuel” for my emotions, in much the same way that a great piece of music gives me “audible fuel” for my emotions. Think about your favorite music: You hear that hypnotic theme you love…and your pulse quickens. Looking at these images, I hope you feel the color jump out and energize you.
