Derek Berwin, London England Member Since January 2015 Artist Statement I started earning from my photography at 12 years of age. Using a Goertz Anschuetz press camera bought for me by my father, thanks Dad. By 16 I was and remain the youngest ever staff photographer in London’s Fleet Street. Covering all the normal press assignments. By 18 was attached to our Royal Family as an accredited Royal Rota photographer, undertaking many of all the Royal families overseas tours. I also undertook one to one sittings with heads of state and world leaders worldwide.
The travel and excitement continued visiting most countries in the world, until I decided to embark on an advertising career at 26. I gained clients as diverse as Rolls-Royce. Ford. Jaguar cars, Martini. Evinrude and Johnson Outboards etc., holding the World Championship in underwater photography for 3 years. I also produced many Tourist Board and advertising campaigns with my underwater and other work.
I was privileged on many occasions to be asked to photograph King Hussein and Queen Noor and their family in Jordan. King Hussein was a keen sportsman and accompanied me on one underwater advertising shoot at Aquaba. Queen Noor was the patron of the Jordanian Royal Conservation Society which commissioned me to help make a survey of the coastline to help set up a marine conservation area and joined me for an interview and Photo session afterwards. I found the King and The Queen and their children such friendly and helpful sitters.
Having retired from commissioned work at the tender age of 60, I have been self-commissioning and am a contributor to the www.gettyimages library for media sales, under gso images. Now I offer you the opportunity to own a selection of my unique images as fine art prints only.
